National Consumer Helpline (1915): what it does and how to complain
The National Consumer Helpline is a free government service: call 1915 or file online, and it forwards your complaint to the company. Many disputes settle there, before any legal step.
The National Consumer Helpline (NCH) is run by the Department of Consumer Affairs. It is free, and it is usually the step between complaining to the company and sending a legal notice.
How to register a complaint
- Call 1915.
- Or file on consumerhelpline.gov.in, or in the NCH/INGRAM app, with your own login.
What to write
Keep it short and factual: what you bought, from whom, when and for how much; what went wrong; what you already did (your written complaint to the company and its date); and what you want. Keep the docket number you are given.
What happens next
The helpline forwards the complaint to the company, which is asked to respond. If it settles, good. If it does not, you have the docket as evidence of one more attempt, and you can move to a legal notice and then the Consumer Commission.
Questions
- Is the National Consumer Helpline free?
- Yes. Calling 1915 and filing online cost nothing.
- Can the helpline force a company to refund me?
- No, it is not a court. It forwards your complaint and asks the company to respond. Only a Consumer Commission can order a company to pay.
